Bayes History
In 2005 five senior risk analysts came together to form a company that acknowledged the importance of providing real decision support through risk analysis and a pragmatic approach to risk management work founded on sharply focused competence. Since start up Bayes has grown at a rapid pace, attracting professionals that share the same ideas and values.
The company is named in honour of the English theologian and mathematician Thomas Bayes (b:1702, d:1761) who has greatly contributed to the development of the probability notion and statistics, and thus the basis for modern risk management. There are two main schools within the risk management profession, i.e. the Frequentist approach anchored in the law of large numbers, and the knowledge based, often referred to as the Bayesian approach. In Bayes we provide risk based decision support in a full Bayesian setting to our customers.
The orange puzzle in our logo refers to the problem known as The Puzzle posed in 1450 by the Italian monk Luca Paccioli: A and B are playing a fair game of Balla. They agree to continue until one has won six rounds. The game is interrupted when A has won five and B three. How should the stakes be divided?
The puzzle on "how to divide the stakes from an unfinished game" was more significant than it appears and subjected to heated debates among mathematicians for 200 years. Finally Pascal and Fermat teamed up in 1654, and the outcome was intellectual dynamite, leading to the discovery of the theory of probability, the mathematical hart of the concept of risk management. Thus, for the first time, people could make decisions as well as forecast the future with the help of numbers.
